Lessons Learned from Building an Interdisciplinary Scientific Community in the Online Sphere

The Microbiology of the Built Environment Network (http://microBE.net – this website) has made it into the community page at PLoS Biology! Our article has been in the works for some time, and we’re now pleased to announce its official publication:

Bik HM, Coil DA, Eisen JA (2014) microBEnet: Lessons Learned from Building an Interdisciplinary Scientific Community in the Online Sphere. PLoS Biology, 12(6): e1001884. doi:10.1371/journal.pbio.1001884

This paper discusses our experiences during the course of the microBEnet project (including both positive steps and challenges faced) – how we’ve experimented with open science tools, engaged the public with citizen microbiology projects, and generally aimed to catalyze interactions between building scientists and microbial ecologists. We also include some stats and resources related to our microBEnet activities.

As always, comments and discussion are welcome!
