Antimicrobial Films for Implants

Researchers at Inserm/Strasbourg University have developed an antimicrobial film for implants. One of the biggest problems with implants is that they can provide ideal breeding grounds for pathogens, causing inflammation in the surrounding tissue and subsequent rejection of the implant. Often, this is avoided by prescribing patients antibiotics or coating implants in them, which of course have a number of side effects both on the patient and the environment (disbiosis, resistance, etc). This new film could become an alternative for using antibiotics.

I’m interested in how effective this implant is in avoiding resistance. From experience, microbes eventually develop resistance to whatever we use to inhibit them. Regardless, it’s a really cool and interesting solution to the problem of infections caused by implants.
